About six months ago my wife and I decided to turn our North Georgia summer retreat into our full-time residence.

We decided to make a few changes to the property now that we would be living in it year-round.

As I was getting into my car one morning, three of the workers paused from what they were doing and stared me down.

I stopped and asked if everything was ok, and one of the men said, “It’s not fair. You have this beautiful home and a nice car while we are stuck doing hard labor for just a little more than minimum wage.”

I approached the men, and we ended up speaking about building wealth for more than an hour. I shared with them that life wasn’t always this good, and at one point I was $50,000 in debt and didn’t know how I would climb out of it. The men shook my hand and thanked me for sharing my insights.

Fast forward to this morning and I was again about to get into my car. A man driving a truck down the street stops in front of my house and yells, “Mr. Siebold, I took your advice and started my own company. I have five employees working for me and business is booming. My family and I are experiencing freedom like we never thought possible.”

So moved that this man turned his life around, I’m now going to take his advice and share the takeaways from that conversation six months ago:

1. In a free-market economy, anyone can make as much money as they want.

2. Your background, highest level of education, or IQ is irrelevant when it comes to earning money.

3. The fastest way to make money is to solve a problem. The bigger the problem you solve, the more money you make.

4. Don’t listen to the naysayers who tell you that life is supposed to be a struggleand that you should settle and be grateful for what you have.

5. Expect to make more money. For this one you have to think big. $100,000, $500,000, or why not $1 million?

6. Lose the fear and scarcity mindset and start seeing money for all the good things: freedom, opportunity, possibility, and abundance.

7. Being rich isn’t a privilege. Being rich is a right. If you create massive value for others, you have the right to be as rich as you want.

8. Don’t wait for your ship to come in. You’re not going to be discovered, saved, or made rich by an outside force. If you want a lot of money, build your own ship. No one is coming to the rescue.

9. Stop worrying about running out of money and focus on how to make more.Constantly worrying about money is no way to live. Dream about money, instead.

10. Stop telling yourself that getting rich is outside of your control. The truth is that making money is an inside job.

10 Proven tips on how to buy your dream car

From negotiating with strangers to ducking high-pressure sales tactics, buying a car can test any man’s emotional stability.But it pays to be smart and stay cool: Researchers at the University of Toronto recently examined 10.5 million new car transactions and found that in some cases, a customer paid $3,000 more for the same car someone else bought in that same month and city.
Why the price difference? According to real car salesmen, the best customers ace their time in the dealership—and score better deals—by following these steps.

Tip -1: Do Your Homework

In 2005, car buyers visited about 4.5 dealerships before making a purchase, according to data from J.D. Power. Today, that number is 1.4 stores—which means shoppers are wasting less time at dealerships and putting in serious prep before ever walking onto a lot.

Do this: Find your magic number, says Doug*, a Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania-based car dealer. Google reviews for your desired make, model, and year; consult the Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com); and search the car manufacturer’s website for a price that works for your budget.

Once you have a figure, bring it to the dealership. Regardless of where the number comes from, “we have to treat every lead seriously,” says Doug.

You can even tell a white lie and say you have another option from a rival store, says Ernie Boch, Jr., president and CEO of Subaru of New England. “A lot of people do this, and they weren’t even at another dealership.”

 Tip -2: Find the Right Salesman

There are two types of salespeople, says Boch: the mercenary who only cares about what’s in it for him, and the legitimate, caring worker.

Do this: Don’t like the guy you’re working with? Cut him loose.

“For every walking stereotype shyster, there are two or three regular Joes just trying to earn a living,” Doug says.

You can usually find the names of great salespeople on business review sites like Yelp. Ask to schedule an appointment with them by name, or request a sales manager.

 Tip -3: Don’t Give In To Pressure

Dead set on a particular make and model? Don’t let the salesman sway you to another car.

Salespeople often score bonuses for selling specific models, says Doug. They’re called ‘spin checks’ and clock in at anywhere from $100 to $500, he says.

Do this: Stick to your guns and ask hard questions.

“A good, educated costumer says, ‘Are there any incentives you have to hit this month?’” says Steven*, a New York-based dealership owner.

Knowing what you’re up against can help you understand everyone’s interests.

Tip -4: Don’t Fall In Love Too Easily

You’ve felt the wheel beneath your hands. You’ve heard the hum of the engine. Now you have an emotional connection to the car.

But be careful, Steven cautions. This can tank a deal.

Do this: Sub beige interiors for black interiors if that’s what’s on the lot.

Dealers want to relieve themselves of inventory as quickly as possible, says Steven. Take a car off their hands and it could mean a better deal.

“More often than not, the vehicle available to you for least amount is the vehicle you want . . . but not exactly what you want,” says Boch.

Tip -5: Walk Away

Remember: You have all the leverage—not the salesman. All you need to do is walk away.

“The biggest weapon the customer has is his feet,” says Boch.

Do this: At some point, a manager will come over to try to seal the deal. Tell him you have to think about it, suggests Doug.

He’ll do anything to keep you there, but walk out politely and give it a day. Steven guarantees the dealer will call the next day, which is when you say, “I’d really like to get to XXX. That’s as far as my budget goes.”

Tip -6: Shop On the Right Days

The auto industry lives and dies in 30-day periods, says Boch. Pro tip: Avoid all dealerships on the first of the month, when lots are the most full and dealers are the least desperate.

Do this: Salesmen have a monthly quota they’re trying to hit, Boch says. Wait until the last three days of the month to score the best possible deal.

Many dealerships also work in 10-day periods, says Boch, so visit lots on the 10th and 20th days of the month and you may have better odds of landing the price you want.

And if you don’t have any New Year’s plans yet, consider car shopping on December 31. Not only do salesmen want to hit their monthly goals, says Boch, but they also want to inflate their yearly numbers.

Tip -7: Shop a Few Towns Over

If you’re hitting up the local lot down the block, they’ll likely charge you more, says Steven.

“But if I get someone who comes in from 50 miles away, I’ll give them a lower price—because I know I don’t get the opportunity to get their business often.”

Do this: Scout out dealerships within a 2-hour drive on sites like cars.com, autotrader.com, and cargurus.com, then take a road trip, Doug says. Chances are you’ll enjoy the ride home.

Tip-8. Secure your own financing if you can.

A great way to avoid the drama in the finance office is to get a loan from your local credit union. However, if you’re buying a new car and you want to take advantage of a special interest rate (like 0%), you’re going to have to work with the dealership’s finance person.

Quite frankly, I don’t see what the big deal is about going through finance. It’s true that you’re going to be brought into a small room with a very good salesperson, and that he or she is going to pitch you all sorts of stuff. You’re an adult. You can handle this. Be polite, but say no to everything. It’s not personal, it’s just business.

If you’ve got bad credit, the dealership finance office is going to help you out (at least a little bit). However, this doesn’t mean you need to do them a favor and buy a warranty or something…just say no. 

Tip -9: Always be polite.

In some of the other answers to this question, I’ve read suggestions about telling the dealer to “take it or leave it,” threatening to walk out, etc. This is all bad advice.

There are a lot of things that suck about working at a car dealership, not the least of which is being treated like crap by most of the people you deal with. While dealership employees learn how to “warm customers up” – it usually only takes a minute or two to get a stranger to laugh and relax a little.

Tip -10: Rinse, wash and repeat .

Do the same process concurrently with a couple of other dealers in your area. Make sure they have the car you want, and then give them their mission.

Step 1: How Much Car Can You Afford?
A rule of thumb: If you’re taking out a loan to pay for your car, your car payment shouldn’t be more than 20 percent of your take-home pay. If you’re sticking to a tight budget, you may want to spend even less. Used cars will need a little extra attention from time to time: new tires, maintenance and the like. And then there are the other ownership costs shoppers sometimes forget to account for, such as fuel and insurance.

If the car you’re planning to buy is out of warranty, it might be a good idea to set aside a “just-in-case” fund to cover any unexpected repairs.

Step 2: Build a Target List of Used Cars
It’s no secret that the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry make for good used cars. But they might cost a few thousand more than a comparable Ford Fusion or Kia Optima, even though these are good cars, too. So if you’re looking to save money, consider more than one brand. We suggest making a list of three cars that meet your needs and fall within your budget. Edmunds reviews have great information to guide your choices.

If you’re planning to buy a vehicle that is less than 5 years old, consider one that’s certified pre-owned (CPO). CPO vehicles have long-term warranties that are backed by the carmakers, not just the dealership selling it to you. Franchised dealerships that sell that same brand new are the only ones who can sell a CPO car of the same brand. So if you wanted a CPO Chevy Cruze, for example, you’d need to buy it from a Chevy dealer.

Step 3: Check Prices
Prices are driven in part by where you’re shopping. You’ll find used cars in used-car sections of new-car dealerships, independent used-car lots, used-car retailers such as CarMax and websites where private-party sellers list their cars. Of the four, private-party cars will usually have the lowest selling price. CPO cars will usually cost the most, but for the reasons we’ve noted. To see what other people are paying for the models you’ve picked out, Edmunds offers a quick way to see the average price paid for the car in your area.

Step 4: Locate Used Cars for Sale in Your Area
One easy place to start building your target list is the Edmunds used-car inventory page. To find exactly the car you want, you can filter your search by many factors including the miles on the car’s odometer, its price and features, and dealer’s distance from you. Use the websites for other used-car marketplaces mentioned to save time.

Step 5: Check the Vehicle History Report
Unless you’re buying the car from a close friend or family member who can vouch for its history, plan to get avehicle history report. This is an essential early step. If the car you’re looking at has a bad history report, the sooner you know the better.

AutoCheck and Carfax are the two best-known sources for vehicle history reports, which can reveal vital information about the car, including whether the odometer has been rolled back or if it has a salvage title, which means it has been declared a total loss by the insurance company. You’ll use the car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) to get this information, and in some cases, all you need is the license plate number.

Step 6: Contact the Seller
Once you find a good prospective car, don’t run out to see it. Call the seller first. This is a good way to establish a relationship with the seller and verify the information about the car. You can ask private-party sellers why they’re parting with a car, or whether it has any mechanical problems. And if you’re buying from a dealership, a phone call (or text) is the best way to ensure the car is still in stock.

Sometimes the seller will mention something that wasn’t in the ad that might change your decision to buy the car. If you want to go deeper, our used car questionnaire is a good reminder of what to ask. You will notice that the last question on our list is the asking price of the car. Although many people are tempted to negotiate even before they have laid eyes on the car, it’s better to wait. Once you see the car, you can tie your offer to its condition.

If things are going well, set up an appointment to test-drive the car. If possible, make it for daylight hours. That makes it easier to see the car’s condition.

Step 7: Test-Drive the Car
Test-driving a used car is the best way to know if this is the right car make and model for you. It’s also a good way to assess this particular car’s condition. So tune out distractions and focus on the car. Here are some things to check:

  • Is it easy to get in and out of the car without stooping or banging your head?
  • Is there enough headroom, hiproom and legroom? Remember to see how these feel in the backseat, too.
  • Is the driving position comfortable? Do you sit too low, too high or just right in the car? Can you tilt or telescope the steering wheel for a better fit?
  • Are the seats comfortable? Are they easily adjustable? Is there a lumbar support adjustment for the driver? How about the front-seat passenger?
  • Do you see a lit “check engine” light? If so, get that problem checked out before buying.
  • How is the visibility? Check the rearview mirror and the side mirrors. Look for potential blind spots.
  • Use your nose. Do you smell gas, burning oil, or anything amiss?
  • Check out the tires. How old are they? Is there enough tread left?
  • How are the brakes? Are they doing the job of stopping the car? Do they squeak?
  • Pop the hood. You don’t have to know a lot about cars to see if something looks wrong. If something is leaking, steaming or covered in oil, it’s time to ask questions.
  • Does the air-conditioning blow cold? Do headlights, brake lights and turn indicators work? Test them to be sure.

After the test drive, ask the owner or dealer if you can see the service records. These will show you if the car has had the scheduled maintenance performed on time.

Step 8: Have the Car Inspected
If you like the car, consider having it inspected by a mechanic before you buy it. If you don’t have a mechanic, Google and Yelp are good places to read local shops’ reviews. A pre-purchase inspection costs about $100 and can alert you to problems you may not find yourself. It’s a smart investment.

A private-party seller will probably allow you to do this without much resistance. Most dealerships will let you borrow a car to take to be inspected by an outside mechanic. You’ll be paying the inspection, of course. If it is a CPO car, there’s already been an inspection and a warranty is in place, so there is little reason to take it to a mechanic.

Step 9: Negotiate a Good Deal
Does the idea of “talking numbers” fill you with dread? It shouldn’t. Negotiating doesn’t have to be a drawn-out, traumatic experience. If you are reasonable and have a plan, chances are you can make a deal pretty quickly and easily:

  • Decide ahead of time how much you’re willing to spend to get the car. But don’t start with this number in your discussion.
  • Make an opening offer that is lower than your maximum price, but in the ballpark based on your average price paid research in Step 3. Explain that you’ve done research on Edmunds or wherever else, so you have facts to support your offer.
  • If you and the seller arrive at a price that sounds good to you and is near the average price paid, you’re probably in good shape.
  • And remember, the people on the other side probably hate negotiating too (even if it’s their job).

Step 10: Get the Paperwork Done
If you are at a dealership, you’ll sign the contract in the finance and insurance office. There, you will likely be offered additional items, such as a warranty, anti-theft devices, prepaid service plans or fabric protection.

Some people want the peace of mind that comes with extended warranties, so this is something you might want to consider (unless the car is still under the manufacturer’s warranty or is a CPO vehicle). Review the dealership sales contract thoroughly. In most states, it lists the cost of the vehicle, a documentation fee, possibly a small charge for a smog certificate, sales tax and license fees.

If you are buying a car from an individual owner, make sure the seller properly transfers the title and registration to you. It’s important to close the deal correctly to avoid after-sale hassles. Before money changes hands, ask for the title (which is sometimes called the pink slip) and have the seller sign it over to you. Rules governing vehicle registration and licensing vary from state to state. If possible, check with your local department of motor vehicles to make sure there are no past-due registration fees you’d be responsible for should you buy the car. Whether you buy from a dealer or a private party, make sure you have insurance for the car before you drive it away.

Once you’ve done the paperwork, it’s time to celebrate your new purchase – maybe with a drive-through dinner. You deserve it!

Step 3: Calculate What You Can Afford

Let Your Budget Do the Driving
When considering a new vehicle purchase, the lines of affordability can easily become blurred due to the varied financing options available. A wise buyer shops for a new vehicle based upon what he or she can truly afford. Keep an open mind and you could be pleasantly surprised by the list of vehicles within your price range.

Affordability is a multi-faceted issue because the car-buying process can consist of several financial considerations. It will help if you determine, accurately and honestly, what your current car is worth, how much of a down payment you can make and a reasonable amount you can handle for monthly payments. Some careful thought and cold, hard honesty will pay big benefits later. Far too many buyers shop for cars that are beyond their budgets, want small down payments, drastically misjudge their capabilities regarding monthly payments and then want to reduce the monthly payments by stretching out the lengths of the loans, all of which leads to trouble in the future.

Another key element is deciding what to do with the current car.? As a general rule, it may be worth more to sell it yourself, to a private party, than to trade it in. But many people don’t want to take the time and make the effort to do that. You should understand that if you trade it in you will probably not get as much for it as if you sell it yourself.

The biggest issue for most buyers is the price of the new car. Fortunately, determining the MSRP is easy, and figuring at least a range for a realistic transaction price is also not terribly difficult.

Calculating Affordability
The new-car buying process is greatly simplified when you discover the bottom-line vehicle price you can afford ahead of time.
This is true whether you lease or buy. Here’s an example of the kinds of details that may be involved in a typical new-car deal:

  1. “The trade-in value of the vehicle I currently own is $10,400.”
  2. “I owe $2,200 on it.” Meaning, you have about $8,200 equity in the car.
  3. “I’ve got $2,000 in savings I want to put down.” Meaning, with the trade, you will be able to give the dealer a total of about $10,200.
  4. “I want to keep my payments under $400 per month for 60 months.” That monthly payment schedule will finance, roughly, about $20,000, meaning the total price of the whole package can be the $20,000 plus the $10,200 you have handed the dealer, or $30,200. That means a new car in the price range of roughly $27,000, because there will be, generally, about 10 percent added in taxes, license, fees and so forth.
  5. Furthermore, it means the whole deal, by the time you have paid it off in five years, will have cost you about $34,200 ($400 times 60 months is $24,000, plus the $10,200 you gave the dealer in the form of your trade and the $2,000 down.

This means the same as:

  • “I can afford to buy a $27,000 vehicle.” And it’s going to cost you $34,200 and five years to do it.

There are many online tools available to help you determine affordability.

Your Current Vehicle — Trade In or Sell Yourself
If your car is in extremely good condition and you have impeccable service records, it may be well worth your while to sell it on your own. On the other hand, if your car needs a lot of work, you may end up putting more money into it than you can recover — so take a realistic look before you decide.

For trade-in, get the Blue Book® Trade-in Trade-in Value of your current vehicle. This value — based upon the condition of your vehicle — is an accurate representation of what you may expect to be offered when trading in your vehicle at a dealership. If you decide to trade in your vehicle, keep in mind the dealer must assume the responsibility for preparing your trade-in for resale. This will cost the dealer money, and the dealer will figure this into the deal.

  • MSRP Price
    The MSRP is the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price, also known as the “sticker price.” This price is required by law to be posted on every new vehicle and is usually — but not always — the highest market price. The exceptions occur when certain vehicles are in high demand or have low availability.

Safety
There are two aspects of safety. One is called “passive safety,” which concerns itself primarily with protection of the occupants in the event of a crash. For the most part, passive safety is the job of the car, although the occupants have the responsibility to use the seat belts. Features associated with passive safety include airbags, energy-absorbing crumple zones, seat-belt pretensioners, head-protection devices and the like. The other aspect is called “active safety,” which concerns itself primarily with not having the crash in the first place. For the most part, active safety is the job of the driver, but certain important features on the car can help the driver avoid a crash. These features include such things as antilock brakes, traction control and stability control. For driving in bad weather or on slippery surfaces, all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive can also be considered as having a positive effect on active safety.

The relative importance of these features may vary based upon your driving style and where you drive. You can also check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Government 5-Star Safety ratings.These ratings will give you an idea of the relative performance levels of various cars and trucks in crashes, and an indication of how your prospective vehicle’s safety features compare to those of others.
